Summit of Nicky Nook |
I decided to go for a
walk round Nicky Nook to fulfil my desire to further explore and photograph the new route I had found back
in February. I drove via back roads to Slean End, but there
was no parking space down by the gate and at the top area the drop edge of the road is too high. So of necessity I drove to the top of the lane above Scorton and walked back to Slean End. Then I set off to locate the new
path I used on 15 February - six months ago! This time I remembered to bring my camera!
The path that had been so muddy earlier was now very dry and almost covered by high bracken. It is clear it's still used by people on mountain bikes. There was a strong animal smell, rather like that of pigs, but the only animals around were young pheasant.
I located the place where there had been either some logs or boarding that I remember sitting on but there was no sign of these today, only some screens used for pens in which to rear young birds. It suggests that the wide track may not be on public access land. The new O.S. Explorer map doesn't show any track at all! The path then continued along a terrace to the top of the fell, with with fine views over the Grizedale valley and back westward over the Fylde countryside.
Much farther along, it seemed, from how I remembered it from last time, I reached the small stone wind shelter. I stopped to relax in the sun and enjoy the view. I ate a snack while trying to locate the spot on the map. I must check the old ones of the area on the National Library of Scotland website.
I then walked along the edge of the hill, bearing left to the summit (see top picture).

Pleasant resting place |

As I set off on the descent to the car I saw that the small
shelter was visible from the corner of the top wall. It's strange that I had
never noticed it from this angle before.
A lovely day, an interesting new route; it's a good idea to use
it as part of a circular walk to include the valley in future.
