Hazelhurst Fell and Fair Snape
|
There was strong
sunshine from the start, so I set off to Stang Yule after some chores at home. I walked up to my cairn and then right
over to Fiendsdale Head. My legs felt strong, both
seemingly back to normal after a geriatric relapse!

At the bottom of the hill a young farmer from Holme House was rolling the field to smooth out the bumps.
On returning along the road as I reached Clough Heads Wood I
was horrified to see many of the magnificent trees down, and the conifers cut into logs and
stacked ready for taking away! Seeing them in this condition was a physical
shock. Some of the trees were huge beeches, which I have photographed on
previous occasions. What a tragedy! How? Why?

More destruction |
At the buildings further along I spoke to a group of people
who had apparently just moved into residence. They were erecting a playhouse on
stilts for their child. I asked them about the trees, and they told me a huge
storm had felled them. There had been such a storm mentioned on the news,
nick-named 'The Beast From The East '
but my home area, only ten miles away as the crow flies, had not been much affected. As I
continued on my way I saw that a lot of trees in the wood opposite Bleasdale Tower
had also been uprooted. It is so sad to see such havoc and destruction of some
of nature's most beautiful creations.
On the positive side my walk had shown me that I could
still tackle a seven mile walk on the hills without tiring. However, on the road 100 yards
away from the camper I tripped, luckily on the grass verge, and fell flat - no
warning - very odd.
