Rydal Water and Loughrigg Fell |
Thinking it was time I really used the
camper after eighteen months, and that I needed to contact someone at Dove
Cottage about the map I was promised a year ago, I set off after lunch and
parked along the old road up from the cottage. The weather was surprisingly
lovely and warm, with hardly any wind.
I
spoke to someone in the shop and they directed me to see Jane, who is in charge
of the museum displays. Jane wasn't
about, so I drove down to Rydal and walked along the main road overlooking the
lake with views to Loughrigg fell.
Rock with steps, Rydal |
There
is a huge rock by the roadside with steps cut in it, and once there would have
been a good view from the top but now trees obscure everything.
I
decided to call it a day and drove to Baysbrown camp site, where there was a
little problem with the soft earth after all the rains. The farmer has railed
off some parking areas and created some hard standings, as the field has been
churned up quite a bit.
Tuesday
What
a terribly uncomfortable night! It was cold, and I had to put on the heater twice. I went to the cafe above the CO-OP for breakfast .
I
drove to Dove Cottage again and strolled along the road to take photos of Grasmere Lake and Silver How, and Helm
Crag reflected in the water.

I
later met Jane and she took me into the museum workroom where all the posters
and other materials for the museum are designed . She located the map I
had enquired about last year and she will have it copied and sent to me soon.
What a wonderful place to work!
I
then drove back to Rydal for a stroll to my favourite place since 1976 by the
lake. I took photos of the fascinating twisted tree
branches covered with moss and a few daffodils among the rocks by the lake.

I walked through the wood
to the little beach further along the lake. In contrast to the day before the wind felt really cold, so I sat
in the shelter of a wall to eat my lunch. There were quite a few people about,
not all of retired age, some with dogs. I was surprised they didn't appear to be
feeling the cold, some not even wearing a hat.
