Lock No 8
|
A Saturday afternoon with lovely, warm weather with plenty of sunshine, just like it used to be, and perfect for a short walk. So I set off along Blackpool
Road westwards, intending to stroll along towards Freckleton and maybe return by bus. But when I came to the bridge over the highway which I have always
thought of as only a farmer's access to the road, I saw that it's also part of the
Preston Guild Link.

The tidal section to the River Ribble
|
So I changed my mind and went over, and followed the Millenium Link section of Lancaster Canal westwards to the end of the footpath by
Lock 8. From there to the Ribble it is tidal and it looked as though the
high tide often comes up over the lock itself as there was mud on the top
of the gates and around the grass verges.

I think I went down there
many years ago when the link to the Ribble was being built, but I can
remember only a little about it. I am sure the golf course has been either
created or extended since then, because I remember going with Colin across the canal by the footbridge further east and then following a path over fields to Durton Lane and
there was no golf course there then.

It
was a very pleasant stroll, and by the time I reached the road which leads from
the golf course to the main road I was pleasantly tired. At home a hot shower followed by
a cup of Earl Grey with chocolate cake rounded off the afternoon!
