Green Quarter Fell (1394')

Sun 30 Oct 2016

Kentmere village from Green Quarter

Even though it was a cloudy, damp day we were lucky to find space to park by Kentmere church. The path up to Green Quarter was steep but short, and then we were on the bridle path that leads ultimately over the ridge and then down to Longsleddale.

Well engineered cross-fell track

We came across an old ruin which had presumably been built to store fodder for farm animals. Solidly built, there had been three levels, with one of the upper floors being reached by a stone slab forming a bridge from a ramp on the fellside.

No shelter here in bad weather!

We took the diversion to Skeggles Water which on sunny days would be a lovely peaceful place to linger. We stopped for a snack. Our feet were getting soaked again, like on our trudge in Swindale, because of wet grass.

Returning to the bridleway for a short distance we then left it again to climb up to Hollow Moor, the summit of the walk. The usually beautiful view north into Kentmere valley which AW makes mention of was rather bleak today due to lack of sunshine.

The horses on the next hilltop ignored us and we descended on soggy ground northwards on to a track that leads from Green Quarter up to join the usual road over into Longsleddale. I had been completely unaware of it till now. As we were taking our second snack a girl passed us making for that road.

The track drops right into Green QuarterSoon and we were soon back at the car. After divesting ourselves of our wet boots and gaiters we abandoned our original idea of climbing Reston Scar and set off home. The day had been a good exercise but the grey murky weather had denied us the beautiful views described by AW.
