View over Windermere to the high fells from School Knott

We drove up to Windermere and parked on a lay-by on the main road and used the OS map to find a way across the fields and the railway to get to the path shown by AW for School Knott and Grandsire. It was sunny but there was a strong, cold, northerly wind. We met someone who had just been to the top and found it dangerously windy but of course we persevered. We made it easily and sheltered from the wind by the summit rocks for a short while.

The tarn

Then we descended to the lovely tarn, where the larch trees shown in AW's sketch have been reduced to two or three thin specimens. There is a stile on the facing wall that Wainwright either missed or it has been put up since his visit.
This enabled us to reach the interesting summit of Grandsire.

We saw a number of walkers on The Dales Way, as we climbed up to reach the indeterminate summit AW shows as  806 feet. We then descended to the Dales Way and passed along it to reach the section we had earlier used from the main road.
It being still only early afternoon we drove to Staveley, had lunch in the camper, and then struggled against the wind yet again and slipped and slithered on the muddy path to reach the cairn on Reston Scar.

The views from there were very good, and the real reason for our ascent, because on our visit while it was snowing on 16 January this year visibility had been very poor. The sun was getting ready for setting as we left.
