Crinkle Crags (2816')

The camp site at Baysbrown Farm was subjected to a very heavy dew overnight and the long grass was very wet and cold. The sun was up, though, and it looked like we should have a great day. The café at the Coop opens every day but Wednesday so we took advantage of that and ate a hearty breakfast.

We set off then and parked at Stool End, where Mrs Rowand was chatting to some friends and holding a young puppy. She has now collected over £20,000 pounds for Helicopter Rescue. We walked up Oxendale en route for Crinkle Crags.

Great Knott

I found it very tiring climbing to Red Tarn. Probably because I was anxious not to be too slow and cause Alex to be bored. After the ease of my Kentmere round it was rather disheartening. We stopped for a snack before tackling the first crinkle.

At the Bad Step there was a small crowd ascending and descending. Alex had no trouble at all and was up in a trice, so quickly indeed that I didn't manage to get a photo of him on the actual climb! I tried to follow but dared not trust my left leg and as there was quite a crowd waiting I didn't want to delay people, so I decided to go round the bottom. I now wish I'd persevered, because I've done it a number of times before and it is irritating to think I can't repeat it.

We visited every Crinkle and also the three tarns. My plan to descend via Whorneygill Force was abandoned as time was short. The descent using The Band was a little uncomfortable for me and near the bottom I was feeling really worse for wear. Why this should be when things went so well only a month ago I can't explain. On returning to the campsite I had a lovely shower and felt better. We had a fire of sorts again but little to eat apart from a couple of sausages cooked over the embers!
