Hazelhurst Fell Landscape

You can find an index to my other walks here

I go walking on Hazelhurst Fell so many times I thought I should show, by pictures, how to get up to the cairn.

The cairn in 2012

A good place to start is at a lay-by just past the Wyre Car Park on Delph Lane which leads to Oakenclough.

Just before the bungalow known as Stang Yule a short path on the right cuts through a recently replanted strip of woodland.

A part of Parlick Pike can be seen from here.

The route turns left after leaving the wood...

...and goes through the gateway and bears right to another gate.

After the second gate the route follows the rough track round to the right.

The track rises quite steeply.

It leads to a gate and turns left in front of it.

The now narrow path ascends by the wall.

A wide vista opens out on the left over the Fylde. On a clear day The Lake District fells can be seen.

Past another gate...

...and part of Hazelhurst Fell appears ahead.

Soon some very gnarled trees appear over the wall, looking very angry!

Of the stone markers put here in 2001 I can find only one left

Here at another gate the track widens : the stone man can be seen on the horizon.

In a few yards at a junction an overturned direction sign needs repairing and re-erecting

To the right a farm track leads down to the valley; Parlick Pike is seen again in the distance

To the left the route ascends a deep sunken track

After about 100 yards a miniature cairn of 2 or 3 stones on the left marks a cross-roads

A vague path to the right leads to an excellent viewpoint for Fairsnape and Parlick...

...and Beacon Fell with Longridge Fell beyond

Back on the track, crossing straight over and trusting to a very thin sheep trod, the cairn on Hazelhurst Fell shown at the top of this page is soon reached.

The cairn in 2019

Here weary limbs can be rested among the comfortable clumps of heather. (Weary limbs? The round trip is only two miles!)
