Slean End |
I rang Andrew, who, as I suspected, had
not gone walking on account of the poor weather forecast. I suggested a short trip
up to Nicky Nook, and so we set off after a light lunch at home and parked at
Slean End.
The path at Slean end into Grizedale |
The day turned warm and sunny, somewhat
in contrast to the forecast. We were overdressed, wearing jackets and gaiters whereas
dozens of other walkers were on the hill without sweaters and boots!
We
walked right along past the reservoir and through the wood with the magnificent
beech trees. Then we turned left up the steep end of the fell to the summit
trig column. It was warm even there in the breeze, with good visibility for
enjoying the views.
Looking eat to the Bowland Hills |
New chatter has been laid on the slope down to the road above Scorton, which makes it possible to avoid the mud after the rain we have had over the past few weeks, but it's a little unstable on the steeper parts. The only answer is steps, but as the ground is private it's remarkable that much repair work has been completed in the past few years. The bottom of the slope by the road used to be a quagmire!
The small reservoir on the west of the fell top |
There were many cars and Sunday walkers,
of course, on the road, but it had been refreshing to get out and blow off the
cobwebs from the mind!
