Rather late I decided that today looked like being the one in the week with some sun and clear sky so I set off intending to do Wainright's walk around Catrigg Force, but when I reached Clitheroe by-pass I saw the huge bulk of Pendle Hill on my right and decided to walk up there.
Air crash memorial on Pendle Nick |
I parked at Pendle Nick, where there were lots of people setting off on or returning from a walk. A recent memorial stone has been erected to some Australian and British airmen, similar to those on Hazelhurst Fell and at the southern end of the Hornby Road.
Ogden Clough |
It was rather cold at first, with a weak breeze and no sun. There was mud everywhere, as usual - no path stabilization or anti-errosion work has been carried out anywhere between the road and the paved path above Ogden Clough, and although no-one wants chatter all over the fell drainage would help the path surfaces to dry out and become firm.
There were many people about, and some runners among them. Everyone seemed happy and friendly.
The crossing for the paved summit path |
I tried to attain the top by continuing past what appears to be an old boundary stone with a modern inscription instead of using the paved route, because that was the way I went with Malcolm at night on an unsuccessful attempt to witness sunrise on June 24 2002 (fifteen years ago!!) but the route is now overgrown by rushes and is very wet. I have been up Pendle a few times since, alone or with Colin and, later, Arnold.
Old stone? with new inscription |
So I returned to the stepping stones and had my lunch in the sunshine. Then, as the wind grew colder, set off for the summit using the paved way.
Paved route (looking from the summit) |
I didn't stop long, just to take a couple of photos, and then set off back. I reached the car around four - it's longer on the ridge than it looks.
I had at last a reasonable walk after being cooped up inside four walls for many days.
