Moughton (1402’)

Summit of Moughton, with Penyghent in distance

Up at 6 o'clock, not knowing if the forecasted excellent weather was going to happen. But off I went just turned 7:30 and spent the rest of the day in and above Crummackdale in bright sunny weather with only a gentle cold breeze.

The route up to Moughton Scar

I went up from Wharfe by Dry Rigg Quarry, and on to Long Scar by the Robbie Stone. On the Scar I saw again the strange array of limestone shards stuck up between the clints, and then made my way on to the summit of Moughton.

The stones and cairn on Long Scar

There I had a light lunch, after meeting another old walker who told me about his preferred way up and down the mountain but didn't appear to be interested in mine! However, I am indebted to him, for in dropping down the path he had used for ascent I reached the edge path above the valley, which I knew, and en route discovered a small shelter looking a little like the stone chair on Red Pike in Wasdale, and lower down a small amphitheatre.

View to Ingleborough from the edge path

From the path along the edge the view westward is superb, and I noticed a small enclosure below the cliffs of Moughton Scars which appeared to be an ideal spot to sit and enjoy the view. Later from a different angle it was clear the area was on quite a steep slope.
Arriving at the cairn overlooking the head of the Dale I sat for a while and passed a few words with several other walkers, before moving along as near to the edge as I dared till I reached Beggar's stile.

I sat in the sun and finished my meal, before deciding that it was too early to return to the car and encounter the traffic from BAE at Samlesbury. I therefore walked up to Sulber Gate as last week but then along the ridge path before descending to Crummack.
The lane leading to the Wash Dub Field was as messy as ever since the farmer decided to take his huge tractor that way. After a few minutes by the stream I continued down the enclosed path to Wharfe and the car. Another excellent day!
