Destination: Moughton summit, 1204 ft |
Andrew called: he felt like walking as there seemed to be plenty of sun. I said I wasn't ready so Andrew went off towards Malham. After thinking about how lovely the weather was, I decided to ask Alex if he would like to go walking. We set off rather late with a hurriedly packed lunch and drove to Wharfe.
The ford at the Washdub Field |
I feel it's almost compulsory to call at the washdub field, and after a brief pause we set off up the track towards Moughton Scars. When we reached the gate below Studrigg Scar I realised that once again I had left my walking pole behind! Perhaps it really wants to be left in Crummackdale? I left my rucsack with Alex and ran part of the way down to the stream, and luckily my pole was still there on the seat occupied by a lone walker. I did not run all the way back up the lane!
Pen-y-Ghent from the summit |
We reached the summit of Moughton. There was absolutely no wind, and the sun was warm enough for us to sit by the cairn for our rather poor lunch. The views in all directions were clear and inspiring. I had intended using the edge path to the junction to Horton, but the late start made it preferable to return by the outward route. The descent from the ladder stile on Studrigg Scar was much easier than last time I came this way, presenting no problems for me. We returned for a brief spell to the washdub field and then made for Wharfe.
Inquisitive lambs near Wharfe |
As we neared the car we noticed some different kinds of sheep in a field, and then two lambs who seemed to want to get to know us. Alex went to coax them nearer, and in spite of their mother's warning they came up to the gate and to our delight one of them allowed Alex to stroke its nose. Quite a rare event in my experience.
