Yewbarrow |
Mon 26 May 2014 Up at 6.00 and headed off to Wasdale. The
mountains were cloud-covered. Yewbarrow looked too high and steep and
unwelcoming, unlike in the photo here, which was taken on a much sunnier day in
June 2012. The ascent to the bottom of the scree was a slog. Then as we met the rocky climb I began to actually
enjoy it. There were moments of worry when we appeared to be getting to the top
when there was suddenly more steep rock to deal with. Eventually we made it to Great Door. I was sweating.

It was cool and clammy on the ridge after the effort on the ascent.

The summit, complete with summiteer |
After the joyous experience of seeing absolutely no scenery from the cloud covered ridge, I wasn't keen on descending direct to Dore Head, remembering the last time I went that way and slipped, twisting my wrist. So we located AW's side escape route. But it led over the rocks and got more and more uncomfortable and we had to drop down to the grass slopes and thus attain Dore Head from the valley path. We should have taken the direct route, shouldn't we? (Yes).

Above Dore Head: a view of the whole of Yewbarrow |
After our lunch and a rest at Dore Head, it being 12 o'clock, we set off up the reasonably easy slope to Red Pike. Cloud gathered again and visibility was not good. Because of the mist, we missed The Chair. Annoying, that. As we approached the summit the cloud began to lift, and the most remarkable views met our eyes as we gazed over Mosedale to Kirk Fell and Pillar and beyond. Fantastic scenery like this makes any painful struggle worth while.

Scoat Tarn |
Andrew would have liked to visit Scoat Fell but time was pressing. We decided to use AW's route down by the lovely Low Tarn and follow Brimfull Beck. I had done this on my previous visit and had seen fish in it. Today the descent took much longer than we expected.

Low Tarn |
It had been a good day, finishing in really hot sun. In spite of our early start, it is a long way to Wasdale and it was 7.15. by the time we reached home. Andrew has to be off to work tomorrow at 3 or 4 o'clock!
