Hoping to walk perhaps as far as the Grouse Shelter near the source of the Tarnbrook Wyre, I was disappointed first by the disappearance quite early of any sunshine and then by the area being used for shooting. I parked at Tower Lodge on the Trough road and walked as far as Tarnbrook below Greenside Hill and there was no shooting taking place in the area I’d chosen. Still, it is private, and so I heaved myself back up past Gilberton Farm and its beautifully sited barns and on to White Moor and decided to climb up to Miller’s House.

Oh dear no! Beaters were working the slopes below Rowantree Rocks for shooters over the other side of the Trough road. So another retreat!

Although there was no danger from shooters on Brennand Great Hill as far as I could see, (who knows?) I called it a day and went back to the car.
