Angletarn Pikes (1857') Beda Fell (1670')

A group of youngsters tackling Angletarn Beck

Off on a cold but sunny morning to Patterdale. I had planned a nostalgic visit to Angle Tarn via Angletarn Beck, a walk, or scramble rather, that I had done with a young group in around 1973/4. We parked at Bridgend and when we got to the beck I was amazed to see a group of youngsters around the same age as mine had been, but here with girls among them. It was a Scout group. They were being introduced to scrambling up the stream.

We began to climb the barely discernible path, but I became a little concerned as it was very steep and slippery. I was soon on all fours in places, grabbing wet sods to help me up. I didn't dare stand upright.  A very different experience from almost forty years ago when I just marched up! Andrew, on the other hand, was thoroughly enjoying the scramble.

We crossed the beck higher up

We made it to the tarn, whereas the Scout groups climbed up to an eminence above it. We then moved over to a higher position, from where the view was really impressive, looking over the water bathed in sunshine. Not a breath of wind, and a beautiful blue sky. This in November, when sometimes we get better conditions than in mid-summer.

The summit of Angle Tarn Pikes

After visiting the twin summits we headed off on the two mile trek to Beda Fell. I was keen to make good time, because this was the same weekend as last year when we were almost benighted on Glaramara.

My second visit to Beda Fell
On our return we dropped down easily to Boredale Hause, but somehow mis-identified the ruin above the path leading down towards Hartsop

Boredale Hause and Place Fell
After correcting our position we reached the valley and the car. An excellent day on the fells, with such a delightful experience of seeing those boys and girls doing what my youngsters had done around thirty-eight years ago! Wonderful!
