Wainwright Challenge 2020

 2 July 2021

You can find an index to my other walks here

Well, I managed the postponed 2020 Challenge on 2 July 2021, that of visiting the sheepfold with massive corners in Greenburn. The walk which I took as a gentle stroll was most enjoyable, in lovely warm sunshine, on my first visit to the Lakes since well before the pandemic.

My real challenge was: how an octogenarian with a balance problem should cross a stream using three large stepping stones. I elected to take off my footwear and paddle across doubled over, using the stones as hand supports.

The huge corner stones of the fold were not built by the shepherd, industrious as he was; he simply joined his walls to two huge fallen rocks. Canny chap. A lovely place for lunch with a splendid view of a much greater challenge: Steel Fell.

In compliance with Sod’s Law I found an easier crossing point on the return over the stream!

The member who chose to visit the oval sheepfold has/had a much greater challenge: finding it. When I was there on 2 July it was completely covered by bracken!
