Excellent views of the Bowland Fells |
I went to Grizedale Bridge and walked through Holme Wood. There are many alder trees, which are well-suited to wet sites, and wooden artefacts made from it can lie in the water a long time without rotting.
Ford or bridge - you have a choice |
Boarding helps in the muddy areas |
I was astonished to see how low the water was. The reservoir is fed solely by Grizedale Brook and tiny drainage from the side heights so it's not surprising it hadn't recovered from the unusual summer dryness.
Low water level in the reservoir |
I also found some fungi, which I later identified as the poisonous Fool's Funnel, or Sweating Mushroom, (Clitocybe rivulosa) which if eaten can cause diarrhea, kidney damage, and, in extreme cases, death.
Fool's Funnel |
Once on the Grizedale track I ascended by the series of steep steps recently built. I went mainly to see if I had possibly left my walking pole anywhere on the top of the fell on my last visit, but no luck.
Black Combe can be seen from on a clear day |
Still, it was a pleasant walk and although the breeze on Nicky Nook was rather cold it was compensated for by excellent views in clear sunlight.
Old quarry workings? |
I used the outward route to return to the car
