Lingmoor, with Oak Howe Needle |
The mountains were all
under cloud when I awoke, the temperature was warm, there was no wind, and the
feeling was that we were in for a dull day. I decided that it wouldn't be very interesting on Silver How, but perhaps I could go through Baysbrown Wood and into Little Langdale and thence over the east shoulder of Lingmoor.

The start of the climb through Baysbrown Wood |
Back at the spot where I encountered the strong smell of garlic yesterday I turned right and took the bridleway up through the wood. An ancient track indeed, which had once climbed between
walls, but had later assumed a path alongside the original.

The bridleway to Little Langdale |
From the top I dropped down to the
track that connects Elterwater with Little Langdale.

Looking over Little Langdale to Wetherlam and beyond |
Just before Dale End Farm I
turned right on to the path to Lingmoor, the clouds having burned out and the
sun shining down bright and very hot. I intended to climb up as far as the
ridge of the fell at the gate I had used a number of times when ascending from
Langdale.

It was a hot climb up to the ridge of Lingmoor |
On the way as I stopped for a rest a chap caught me up and we had a
chat. He wanted to inspect the area around Lingmoor Tarn, where he planned to
camp sometime in the future. Coincidentally, like me he had been reading in
Wainwright about the Oak Howe Needle, and wanted to get a good close-up of it.

I let him get on ahead and then followed in his footsteps
up to the ridge, where I identified the gate which has two metal steps on it,
over which I would be going later to descend to the campsite. This is the only such style of stile I have seen, but there may be others. I climbed further up the fell, remembering the time I had explored the old ruins AW mentions. I felt it was silly not to complete the ascent to the summit, but when I reached the point where I could see how far it was I wasn't happy to continue in the heat. I decided to resume my original plan and headed back over the gate and down into Great Langdale.
