The Langdale Pikes from Baysbrown Campsite |
I drove up to Langdale yesterday but remembered rather late that I had left my computer on at home, so this morning I went back to switch it off. It had been pleasant driving down but the temperature rose to over 25ÂșC on the way back and on the campsite there was no breeze.
Baysbrown Farm |
After a snack I decided it was rather too hot to climb the fells so I took a walk up the valley
to Dungeon Ghyll.
I was surprised to find that the path from Baysbrown
doesn't actually touch Oak How; the path Andrew and I used after walking over
Lingmoor (Sunday 17 July 2011) keeps to the south of the beck, passes close to
Oak How, and on to Baysbrown Farm and thence to Elterwater.
Oak How nestles under Lingmoor below Oak How Needle |
The track I took today turns north near Oak How and goes on the north side of Great Langdale Beck to New Dungeon Gyll.
Heck, Mavis, it's a hot 'un today! |
On the left, Side Pike |
There are some excellent views of the fells at the head of Great Langdale from this path. The summit of Lingmoor, to the south, provides one of the best, if not the best, of views in the whole Lake District.
On the right, Scout Crag |
To the north is Scout Crag, where I abseiled down as part of a Mountain Walking Certificate Course back in the seventies.
Thirsty, I had a local lager at Stickle Barn (note: you can't get a Guinness
there - but you can at the hotel next door).
The buses, even in the
summer season, run only every two hours, and as it was an hour before the next
one I walked back to the campsite. A pleasant stroll, even in the heat.
