Red Screes from St Raven's Edge

Andrew picked me up at nine and we parked at Kirkstone and climbed up on to Caudale Moor. The weather was warm and the visibility excellent. I felt fairly fit, but I found the simple climb to the summit was tiring and my right knee started complaining.

Along St Raven's Edge to the summit

When standing looking down to Threshwaite Mouth I couldn't face our original intention of ascending the loose and steep way to Thornthwaite Crag, and over to High Street, and especially the descent therefrom on the return. I suggested Andrew should carry on, but he decided to stay with me. We sat above Troutbeck valley to eat our lunch, with superb views over the west Kentmere fells.

He then suggested we explore the summit area and take a wander over to a view into Caudale. We saw a group of youngsters whose leaders were taking them down the ridge to the road near Brothers Water, a route I would like to explore myself some day.

Caudale

Memorial to Mark & William Atkinson

We visited the memorial to the Atkinsons and then set off back to Kirkstone Pass.
It turned out to be wise not to have proceeded beyond Caudale Moor as the journey back took much longer than expected.
I found it unpleasant descending the rocky track to the car park, because my right knee had been stiff and painful all day, after many weeks of giving no trouble.

A cider for Andrew and a pint of Guinness for me concluded a pleasant day.
