Musbury Valley and Tor (c.1109')

Sun 7 August 2016

Tor from Rushy Leach

On a very windy and blustery morning I picked up Andrew at around nine o'clock, and drove to Clough Head car park on Grane Road above Haslingden and had a second breakfast!
We then went down to the reservoirs and up over Musbury Heights to walk round the RW. New way-mark signs have been screwed to most of the posts. I like to think my exhortations of the LCC helped get that done  The area around Rushy Leach was, as usual, abominably boggy, and so was part of the path where the bank of the old deer enclosure is breached by water and mud from the hillside above.  Just after Musden Head ruins the path has suffered a landslip similar to the one some years ago further along by the corner.
We took a clear path not shown on the map to the west of the farmed section of Tor, and arrived at Big Nor.

Big Nor overlooks Helmshore

It seemed to be more tilted than I remember it, and I am surprised that years ago I ever went to stand on it. Even Dad did so - I have a photo of him there. Andrew seemed unperturbed by the precarious position. The wind was very strong, and blowing towards the edge, and I didn't dare go on to the rock.

Cowpe Low and Scout Moor from Tor

We both recognised some parts of Helmshore we knew, and then descended through a field down to a dwelling on Carr Lane and then past the houses where Fred Mort used to live many years ago.

We then took a track up to a ruin below Musbury Heights.

We contoured round to join the lane to The Heights quarry and then descended right on a path past a renovated house to the reservoirs.
A good walk, but in weather more like that of November than August.
