Devoke Water
|
Leaving home at 7 we drove to
Birker Fell again. We did the Devoke Water circuit. I found the summits looked
slightly different from when I visited them last on 19 May 2011. In fact, the route seemed easier; I remember five years ago the pull up to White Pike was tiring and onerous.

At first the views were rather hazy, but they grew clearer towards the afternoon. From Yoadcastle we were able to place Whit Fell and Stainton Fell in the context of our complete surroundings. This is why it is essential to use an OS map alongside the single fell maps and directions supplied by AW.

When we reached the lake we still had Seat How to climb, which is easy from the rear. One could spend a whole day relaxing on a delightful little terrace overlooking Devoke Water and the whole circuit of fells.

After the walk, the weather still being really
lovely, Andrew felt he had enough energy left to tackle the Great Worm Crag round
and I accompanied him initially until I realised I didn't feel like any more climbing.

Great Worm Crag : a long way from the road!

I left him after twenty minutes or so to make the round at his own pace. Andrew did it in
just under two hours. After the Devoke Water circuit that was a hefty day's
walking. His longed-for mug of tea was coveted by a member of a small herd of cows!

All in all a good day.
