Moughton (1402') via Dry Rigg Quarry, incl Sulber Nick

Moughton Scars

Off with Andrew to Wharfe, whence we walked to the summit of Moughton via the route above the huge Dry Rigg Quarry which I had used on 10 February this year. On Long Scar it was very cold. Andrew photographed the limestone sentinels erected in the grykes of the pavement. It was rather too cold to stay long so we contoured round northwards and reached the summit.
As a dark grey mist appeared in the north heralding possible snow, we decided to take the route to the edge path I'd discovered on 10 February, and by the time we reached the cairn on Moughton Scars the sun was warm and we had a comfortable break for lunch. The view down over Crummackdale never ceases to impress me with its beauty.

Afterwards we headed east along the Horton track, turning west onto Sulber Nick and then south to Sulber Gate above Thieves Moss.

The well-frequented path along Sulber Nick

The walk down from Beggars Stile was painful for me as the big toe on my right foot began to hurt again in spite of the new NHS insoles. It was a relief for me when we reached the car.
