George V memorial on Scout Scar

Off by eight o'clock to meet Andrew and drive to Kendal. We parked by Serpentine Woods and walked the circuit recommended by AW taking in Cunswick and Scout Scars.

Andrew on Cunswick Scar

There were lots of people walking their dogs, of course. I remember doing this walk on a very dry and hot day sometime in 2004 I think. Apart from a short shower early today it was windy and cold.

The lime kiln near the radio mast and car park

We visited the lime kiln just before reaching the radio mast and the car park on the Underbarrow road, where we found a spot for our lunch sheltered from the cold breeze.

Continuing the walk we went as far as the 5th mile marker on AW’s map, and then somehow managed to find the right track from among many that took us down to the Brigsteer road. There we saw a milestone in a similar style to the ones used by MacAdam on the Kendal-Shap road in the eighteen twenties. After that it was a tarmac walk back to the car.

All in all a good day to end another year of fell-walking.
