Fiendsdale Head (1460')

New plane crash memorial, Hazelhurst Fell
Off to Stang Yule again, and up to the summit of the track, noting on the way that my stone man is still vigilantly keeping an eye on the fells. I continued round to one of the stone shooting butts and had my snack.

Then I continued round the back of Hazelhurst Fell and was surprised to discover that a gravestone has been erected and small British and American flags set around it. This was in memory of the pilots and crew of several planes that have crashed neaby, including the two flight sergeants who died in the Blenheim close by. So at last they are commemorated here.

The type of aircraft are not mentioned

I continued up to Fiendsdale Head and then down to the small 'shrine' which has now grown into a substantial cairn. I stopped in the sun for almost an hour, till about 3:25

I wonder who keeps adding to this cairn

There were many swallows and martins swooping over Winny Bank. It is always a pleasant view, especially in the late afternoon, looking down to the foot of Holme House Fell, which I feel could be named Brock Head as the source of one of the two River Brocks is found higher up the valley.

When I later reached the road I had a chat about the sheep and the grouse with the farmer from Holme House, who was sitting on his quadcycle. He told me the lambs have been separated from the ewes now, and will go down to lower ground near Garstang for fattening until market time. The year hasn't been good for grouse, only 100 brace being shot on the estate. He said pheasants still abound, but I heard and saw only a couple. With the majority of trees and rhododendrons gone where is their cover?

As I reached the lodge I noticed that the small mysterious garden with the candelabra which so interested Alex has been renovated, with a lovely pattern of stones and lawn - with the candelabra still there! The notice on the gate reads "Love and joy to all who enter". A delightful place now, open and beautiful. When I later told Alex he didn’t approve, preferring the mysterious atmosphere he had experienced.
